For some reason this character has always been part of my life...I have found her fascinating due to her ideals and the way she sees life.
She was once described by Umberto Eco:
" an irascible heroine that rejects the world how it is claiming her rights to carry on being a little girl that does not want be in
charge of an adulterated universe made by the parents"
She is not like any other girl, she is humble and commited with the etnics, she is worried about the world and does not understand why the adults do everything so wrong. She is famous due to her questions, the innocence of her world and the depth of her ideals.
Her comments and ideas are the mirror of the social and politic anxiety of the sixties in Argentina. Mafalda represents the nonconformist humanity. Her hates are war, injustice, nuclear weapons, racism, the absurd adult conventions, and of course soup. Hehehe she detests soup. And her passions are The Beatles, peace, democracy and human rights. And I feel somewhat like her because I have the same passions and same hates.
Tireless social fighter, transmittes political declarations from her tiny chair. Her creator Quino thinks about the worlds situations and the people that live in it.
I find her little world an amazing place... its a shame that this tiny character is just the imagination and creation of one of the best Argentinian animators there have been.
If any of you get to read some please do. If you go to this website www. mafalda.net/sp/comic.php
there are some comic strips of the charater but obviously in the original language, Spanish.
After the desastrous coup d´etat against Alfonsos government in 1975 Quino draws Mafalda saying:
"Yes to democracy!!!"
"Yes to justice!!"
"Yes to freedom!!"
"Yes to life!!"
VIVA MAFALDA!!!!!!
